No More Flight Mode, Switch Off Phones During Take-off, Landing – NCAA

By Erewunmi Peace
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced a major change to in-flight safety procedures, directing that all mobile phones and electronic devices must be completely switched off during take-off and landing. The previous practice of putting devices on “flight mode” will no longer be accepted.
The directive was issued by Capt. Chris Najomo, Director-General of NCAA, during an emergency stakeholders’ security meeting in Abuja on Monday, August 19, 2025.
“There is nothing like flight mode any longer; passengers must completely switch off all electronic devices during take-off and landing,” Najomo stated.
Why the New Policy?
The NCAA explained that the move is part of harmonizing aviation safety regulations to ensure zero interference with aircraft navigation systems during critical phases of flight.
The agency also instructed all airlines operating in Nigeria to update their security programs and passenger announcements in line with this new requirement.
What This Means for Travelers
Flight mode is no longer acceptable during take-off and landing.
All phones, tablets, and similar gadgets must be powered off completely until the aircraft reaches cruising altitude and the crew gives clearance.
Non-compliance may attract penalties, as airlines have been mandated to enforce the directive strictly.
Public Reactions
The announcement has sparked debates among frequent flyers, with some questioning the necessity in the modern age of advanced aircraft technology, while others support the move for maximum passenger safety.
