By Erewunmi Peace

A traveller, identified as Ayomide Adebero, has accused operatives of the Nigeria Police in Edo State of abducting and extorting him of ₦209,000 while he was on his way to his hotel in Benin City.

According to a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ.ng), the incident occurred on Wednesday night when Ayomide was stopped by uniformed officers. He alleged that he was forced into a police vehicle, detained for several hours, and eventually compelled at gunpoint to transfer ₦209,000 to the officers before being released.

The victim claimed he sustained physical injuries, including swollen lips, during the ordeal.

No Official Police Response Yet

As of press time, the Edo State Police Command has not issued a formal statement regarding the allegation. Efforts to obtain comments from the police are ongoing.

Broader Concerns

This incident adds to growing public concerns about police misconduct and extortion in Nigeria, despite ongoing reforms and promises of accountability by security agencies. Rights groups have repeatedly urged authorities to address cases of harassment, arbitrary detention, and extortion by security operatives.

What’s Next

The development is likely to spark calls for an independent investigation. Nigerians are awaiting an official response from the police to either confirm or refute the allegations.
