In a historic move to revolutionize Nigeria’s basic education sector, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has partnered with the US-based Digital Learning Network (DLN) to roll out 47 million laptops and tablets for students and teachers across the country.
The initiative, described as the largest digital education project in Africa, was unveiled during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UBEC and DLN in Abuja. The project targets pupils and teachers at pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary school levels nationwide.
What the Project Includes
47 million digital devices (DLN laptops and tablets) pre-loaded with the Nigerian curriculum and interactive learning materials.
AI-powered Learning Management System (LMS) for real-time performance tracking, automated grading, and parent-teacher engagement.
Free teacher training through the National Teachers’ Institute to enhance digital teaching skills.
Hybrid internet connectivity, combining 5G, local telecom networks, and Starlink satellite technology, guaranteeing a minimum speed of 50 Mbps in all locations.
According to Aisha Garba, UBEC’s Executive Secretary, the project will cost the government nothing, as it is fully funded by private sector investments and development partners, including Deloitte, UBA, Zenith Bank, and the National Credit Guarantee Company.
DLN President and CEO, Thomas Larmena, stated that this project is a game-changer for Nigeria’s education system, helping bridge the digital divide and prepare millions of students for a technology-driven future.
The first phase has already commenced in Akwa Ibom State, with nationwide distribution set to follow in collaboration with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.
