Who Bewitched Aregbesola? Inside the Rift Between Tinubu and His Former Ally

By: Erewunmi Peace

Once considered one of the most loyal lieutenants of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Osun State governor and ex-Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has become a focal point of political debate following his dramatic fallout with his long-time political benefactor. The rift has sparked conversations about loyalty, ambition, and the realities of Nigerian politics.

The Rise of Aregbesola

Aregbesola’s political journey is deeply tied to Tinubu’s influence. Starting as Commissioner for Works in Lagos State under Tinubu from 1999 to 2007, he later became Governor of Osun State for two terms (2010–2018) and subsequently served as Minister of Interior in President Buhari’s administration—positions largely attributed to Tinubu’s backing.

The Beginning of the Rift

Tensions surfaced ahead of the 2018 Osun governorship election when Tinubu endorsed Gboyega Oyetola as Aregbesola’s successor. Aregbesola reportedly preferred his former Secretary to the State Government, Moshood Adeoti, leading to internal conflicts within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

What began as political disagreement deepened into a full-blown rivalry, with Aregbesola openly criticizing elements of Tinubu’s political structure.

Defection and Realignment

Following the fallout, Aregbesola has distanced himself from Tinubu’s political camp and aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major shift in alliances. He has publicly spoken about the need for internal party democracy, a move seen by many as a direct challenge to Tinubu’s dominance.

Public Reaction

The split has drawn mixed reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape. While some view Aregbesola’s move as an act of betrayal, others see it as a bold stand for political independence. Analysts argue that the rift reflects deeper issues within the APC and highlights the fragility of political loyalty in Nigeria.

Why It Matters

The fallout underscores the changing dynamics of political power within the ruling APC.

It raises questions about the future of Osun politics and Tinubu’s influence nationwide.

Aregbesola’s realignment could impact upcoming elections and the strength of opposition parties.
