The Federal Government has officially reintroduced History as a compulsory subject in the Nigerian school curriculum, marking a major shift in education policy.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the subject will now be taught from Primary 1 through Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3). For senior classes (SSS1–SSS3), History will be merged with Civic Education under a new subject called Civic and Heritage Studies.
The ministry explained that the decision is part of a broader curriculum overhaul designed to strengthen national identity, instill civic values, and ensure students better understand Nigeria’s past.

Teacher retraining programs will be rolled out nationwide.
New textbooks and instructional materials are being developed.
Monitoring and evaluation systems will track the effectiveness of the curriculum.
Officials confirmed that the new curriculum will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
