Igbo National Union Raises Alarm Over Demolition of Igbo-Owned Properties in Lagos
By Erewunmi Peace
The Igbo National Union Worldwide (INU-W) has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the continued demolition of Igbo-owned properties and businesses in Lagos State. In a statement signed by its Administrative Secretary, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, the union faulted both the Federal Government and prominent Yoruba leaders for maintaining silence on the matter.
According to the union, the ongoing demolitions, coupled with what it calls the indifference of federal authorities, could undermine national harmony and spark ethnic tensions if left unaddressed. INU-W has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government to negotiate a peaceful settlement with affected property owners.
The union specifically highlighted demolitions targeting Igbo entrepreneurs, including those in areas like the Lagos International Trade Fair Center in Ojo. INU-W describes these actions as attempts to economically displace the Igbo community in Lagos and has called on the federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to intervene.
While some observers suggest that there may be legal grounds for the demolitions, INU-W maintains that the operations are targeted and unjust, stressing the need for urgent resolution to prevent further tension.
