The Anti-Corruption Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has declared support for the Federal Government’s investigation into the controversial UK property dispute involving human rights lawyer Mike Ozekhome, SAN, and the family of the late Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni.
The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, recently ordered a probe into the matter following allegations of fraud and questionable legal documents linked to the ownership of the property.
In a statement signed by the committee’s chairman, Prof. Babafemi Badejo, the NBA’s Anti-Corruption body said the case raised “improper critical issues” that deserve thorough investigation, including the authenticity of court judgments and the professional conduct of legal practitioners involved.
The committee further urged the government to refer any lawyer found culpable to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) and to pursue criminal investigations where fake or forged documents are detected.
“This probe is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the legal profession and the justice system,” the committee stated.
As at the time of reporting, neither Mr. Ozekhome nor representatives of the Useni family have issued fresh statements regarding the NBA committee’s position.
