Obi Under Fire for Calling Olubadan “My Dear Brother”

By Erewunmi Peace

Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has come under criticism for referring to the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as “my dear brother” in a congratulatory message.

Obi, in a statement released on his official social media handle, congratulated Oba Ladoja on his installation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The former Anambra State governor wrote:

“I warmly congratulate my dear brother, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, on his installation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. His leadership and wisdom will continue to strengthen the cultural and traditional heritage of Ibadan.”

The phrase “my dear brother” sparked mixed reactions. Critics argued that referring to a traditional monarch in such familiar terms was disrespectful and fell short of the honor due to Yoruba royalty.

Political commentator Reno Omokri joined those who condemned Obi’s choice of words, describing it as “a breach of cultural protocol.” Others insisted that, regardless of personal relationships, monarchs should be addressed with reverence befitting their throne.

However, some of Obi’s supporters defended him, saying his words were not meant to undermine the Olubadan, but to reflect the cordial relationship he shares with Oba Ladoja, who is also a respected statesman and former governor of Oyo State.

As of the time of reporting, Peter Obi has not issued an official response to the criticisms.

The development highlights the sensitive role of cultural etiquette in Nigeria’s political and traditional spaces, where language and protocol often carry deep meaning.
