Tanker Explosion on Abeokuta–Sagamu Road: Fire Outbreak, Casualties Unconfirmed
By Erewunmi Peace
An explosion occurred in the early hours of Friday along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway after a petrol-laden tanker overturned and spilled its content, sparking a major fire.
According to reports from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the incident happened around 1:00 a.m. when a tanker carrying about 30,000 litres of fuel lost control along the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu interchange axis.
The spilled petrol ignited, causing an inferno that consumed at least two other vehicles, including a truck and a tow vehicle. A nearby PHCN power cable was also damaged in the fire.
Eyewitnesses reported panic in the area as rescue workers battled to control the situation. Firefighters, TRACE operatives, and other emergency responders were deployed to the scene.
At the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, though some persons are feared dead. Authorities say recovery and assessment efforts are still ongoing.
The affected section of the road has since been cordoned off to allow responders to decant the remaining fuel and ensure the fire is completely extinguished.
The Ogun State traffic agency has urged motorists to exercise caution and use alternative routes while the clean-up continues.
