Ekiti 2026: APC Adopts Governor Oyebanji as Consensus Candidate

By Erewunmi Peace

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially adopted Governor Biodun Oyebanji as its consensus candidate for the forthcoming 2026 Ekiti State governorship election, confirming weeks of speculation about the ruling party’s internal decision.

This followed the formal withdrawal of Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo, who had been the only aspirant challenging Oyebanji for the APC ticket. Her withdrawal paved the way for the party to switch from a direct primary to a consensus arrangement, in line with Section 84(9) and 84(11) of the Electoral Act.

According to letters reportedly sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, October 13, 2025, the APC informed the electoral body of its decision to adopt consensus, citing unity, continuity, and the governor’s performance record as major reasons.

Speaking after the announcement, party officials described the adoption as a reflection of the “people’s choice,” noting that Governor Oyebanji had demonstrated competence, inclusivity, and stability in governance since assuming office in 2022.

“Our decision was based on performance, party unity, and the desire for sustained development in Ekiti State,” one senior APC leader said during a meeting at the party’s secretariat in Ado-Ekiti.

The decision has been confirmed by multiple reputable outlets including Premium Times, Punch, The Cable, TVC News, and The Nation, all of which reported that Oyebanji is now the sole APC candidate ahead of the 2026 poll.

While the development has been welcomed by some party members, others have raised concerns about the fairness of the consensus model, arguing that it limits democratic participation. However, APC leadership insists the move was made in accordance with party rules and national electoral law.

Governor Oyebanji, who succeeded Dr. Kayode Fayemi in 2022, is seeking a second term in office, running on a platform of continuity, grassroots development, and economic expansion.
