Air Peace Commences Construction of ₦32bn Aircraft Maintenance Facility, Promises 50,000 Jobs

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigeria’s largest carrier, Air Peace, has officially commenced construction of a state-of-the-art ₦32 billion Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a major milestone for the country’s aviation sector, as the facility is expected to serve both domestic and international airlines, reducing the heavy reliance on foreign MRO centres.

Speaking at the event, Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, said the project will not only boost Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure but also create massive employment opportunities. According to him, the MRO will generate over 50,000 direct and indirect jobs once operational.

“This project is not just about Air Peace, but about Nigeria. We spend millions of dollars yearly taking our aircraft abroad for maintenance. With this facility, we will save foreign exchange, build local capacity, and empower our youth with skills and jobs,” Onyema stated.

The facility, designed to handle multiple wide-body and narrow-body aircraft, is projected to be completed within 24 months. When operational, it will provide world-class maintenance services, positioning Nigeria as a hub for aviation support in Africa.

Industry analysts say the development could transform Nigeria’s aviation landscape, reduce costs for local airlines, and enhance safety standards, while also contributing to economic growth through job creation and skill development.

Air Peace currently operates a fleet of over 30 aircraft and serves multiple domestic, regional, and international routes. The company believes the new MRO will strengthen its operational efficiency and further support its expansion plans.
