Alleged Coup Plot: Defence Intelligence Arrests 16 Military Officers

By Erewunmi Peace
The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) has reportedly arrested sixteen military officers over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to multiple sources quoted by Sahara Reporters and other online platforms, the officers — reportedly ranging from the rank of Captain to Brigadier General — were taken into custody following intelligence gathered by the DIA.
The alleged arrests are said to have taken place in Abuja and other undisclosed locations. Some reports claim that the officers were accused of “breach of service regulations” and “indiscipline,” while others link the development to a purported coup plot that was allegedly being monitored by the military authorities.
However, no official statement has been issued by the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Army, or the Presidency confirming the alleged coup attempt as of the time of this report.
The military has previously warned against spreading unverified information that could threaten national security or cause public panic.
Government sources have also maintained that President Tinubu’s administration remains stable and that the Armed Forces are committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
Efforts by journalists to reach the Defence Headquarters and the Defence Intelligence Agency for official comments are ongoing.
