Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, Africa’s oldest serving head of state at 92 years old, has officially declared his intention to contest for an eighth term in the upcoming presidential election slated for October 12, 2025.
The announcement was made through the president’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he stated:
“At the dawn of a decisive electoral deadline, I am responding to the call of duty and reason. I am a candidate for the 2025 presidential election.”
The declaration ends weeks of speculation and signals Biya’s continued grip on power, having ruled the Central African nation since 1982.
A Historic Yet Controversial Reign
President Biya’s rule has spanned over four decades, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. His government has been accused of stifling dissent, manipulating electoral processes, and suppressing opposition voices, even as he maintains a strong support base in parts of the country.
In 2008, Biya successfully pushed for a constitutional amendment to eliminate term limits, opening the door for unlimited re-election—a move widely criticized both locally and internationally.
Critics Raise Concerns
Many Cameroonians, opposition groups, and international observers have expressed concern over the president’s advanced age, declining health, and the country’s deteriorating security situation, particularly in the Anglophone regions where separatist violence continues to escalate.
“We are witnessing the hijack of democracy by a man who has nothing left to offer,” said one opposition activist based in Douala.
“This is a call to all Cameroonians to demand change.”
Supporters Say Experience Is Key
Despite the criticism, Biya’s loyalists argue that his experience and stability are essential for guiding the country through economic and security challenges.
“President Biya has kept Cameroon united despite attacks from all fronts. He deserves another term,” said a supporter in Yaoundé.
Looking Ahead
The October 2025 election is expected to be a pivotal moment in Cameroon’s political history. Opposition parties are yet to unite behind a single candidate, which could further tip the odds in Biya’s favor.
International observers are already calling for free, fair, and transparent elections, as global attention turns to the 92-year-old leader’s next political move.
