Atiku Abubakar Officially Resigns from PDP, Cites Party’s “Loss of Direction”

By Erewunmi Peace

In a dramatic political twist, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of affiliation with Nigeria’s once-dominant political platform.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Atiku stated that the party had strayed from the values and principles upon which it was founded. The resignation takes immediate effect.

“It is with deep reflection and concern for the future of our great nation that I tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party,” Atiku wrote. “Over time, the PDP has lost its soul. The party has deviated from its founding ideals of inclusion, justice, and progress.”

This move has triggered a flurry of reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, as Atiku, a five-time presidential candidate, is widely expected to align with a new political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources close to the former Vice President hint at ongoing talks with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other opposition groups seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku’s exit marks a significant blow to the PDP, which has been plagued by internal divisions and leadership tussles in recent years. It also adds to the uncertainty surrounding the 2027 polls, as Nigeria’s major opposition parties scramble for new strategies and alignments.

Atiku’s political journey has seen him move between major parties, including the PDP, APC, and Action Congress. His latest departure is widely viewed as a strategic repositioning ahead of yet another presidential bid.

Public Reactions

Political observers, party chieftains, and citizens alike have taken to social media to weigh in on the announcement, with many describing it as a sign of deeper cracks within the PDP.
