Attacks on Oro Worshippers May Trigger Religious Crisis, Ogun Community Warn

By Erewunmi Peace

Leaders and residents of Idiroko community in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State have raised alarm over renewed attacks on Oro worshippers, warning that the situation could escalate into a full-blown religious crisis if not urgently addressed.

The traditional leaders said the violence, which broke out during the Oro festival rites, poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the border town. They urged the state government and security agencies to intervene and prevent further clashes.

According to community representatives, Oro adherents were recently attacked while performing their rituals, sparking tension between traditional worshippers and members of other faiths in the area.

“The repeated harassment and assaults on our people during Oro rites are unacceptable. If government does not step in, it could degenerate into a religious crisis,” a community leader said.

The dispute centers on disagreements over curfews imposed during Oro festivals. While traditionalists insist the restrictions are part of their age-old practice, Muslim and Christian groups have accused them of violating court rulings and disrupting freedom of worship and movement.

In recent years, clashes linked to Oro observances have resulted in injuries and arrests. In 2023, five traditionalists were remanded by a court for allegedly attacking Muslim faithful during a festival in the state.

Residents are now appealing to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the police, and other stakeholders to enforce peace accords and ensure that no group infringes on the rights of others.

The Ogun State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the latest incident at the time of filing this report.
