Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Sikiru Adetona, joins his ancestors

The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.

The revered monarch, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after over 64 years of distinguished service to the Ijebu people and the Yoruba nation at large. His passing marks the end of one of the longest and most impactful reigns in Nigeria’s traditional leadership history.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State confirmed the monarch’s death in an official statement, describing the day as one of “double tragedy,” as it coincided with the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari

“Oba Sikiru Adetona was not only a king but a father, a cultural pillar, and a shining symbol of dignity, courage, and modern leadership. His contributions to the advancement of Ijebuland and the Yoruba race will remain unforgettable,” the governor said.

Born in 1934, Oba Adetona was known for his fearless advocacy for justice, Yoruba unity, and development. Under his leadership, the Ojude Oba festival became a global celebration of Ijebu culture. He also established educational foundations, sponsored youth development initiatives, and remained a vocal figure in national affairs.

Tributes have poured in from traditional rulers, political leaders, and Nigerians across the world, celebrating the legacy of a king many regarded as one of the most progressive monarchs of his time.

The palace is expected to announce official mourning arrangements and traditional rites in the coming days.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
