The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the deaths of officers following a deadly ambush by suspected bandits in Benue State. The attack, which occurred around Agu Centre in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, has left at least 11 personnel feared dead, with operational vehicles destroyed and weapons carted away.
Police spokespersons initially reported that three officers were killed while seven others remained missing. However, subsequent recovery efforts led to the discovery of more bodies, raising the death toll to 11, according to reports from Punch and other national outlets.
A situation report cited by multiple sources revealed that two police Hilux patrol vehicles were set ablaze during the attack. The assailants also allegedly made away with a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) belonging to Operation Zenda, a joint security outfit active in the state.
The Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate deployment of tactical reinforcements to Benue following the incident. Police authorities confirmed that six suspects have been arrested in connection with the ambush and are currently assisting with investigations.
The attack highlights the growing insecurity in parts of Benue, particularly in Kastina-Ala and Ukum local government areas, where bandit gangs and armed militias are active. Authorities say fresh operations are underway to dismantle criminal networks and rescue missing officers.
While police have officially confirmed some details, reports on the exact number of casualties and the full extent of damage remain fluid. Security agencies continue search and recovery operations, with more updates expected in the coming days.
