Charlie Kirk: What We Know About the Shooting and the Suspect

By Erewunmi Peace
Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. The incident has shocked political circles across the United States.
Authorities say Kirk was struck by a bullet in the neck at around 12:23 p.m. while addressing students at UVU’s Losee Center. He was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he later died.
Investigators believe the fatal shot was fired from the roof of the Losee Center. A .30-06 Mauser hunting rifle was recovered near the scene, along with bullet casings engraved with unusual internet-culture phrases.
Police have identified the suspect as Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah resident. Robinson, who was not a UVU student, turned himself in on September 12 following a tip from a family member.
He was charged with murder and is currently in custody as authorities continue their investigation. Robinson was reportedly working as an electrical apprentice in Washington County and had expressed political frustrations in conversations with family members.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are treating the attack as a targeted assassination. Authorities are still examining Robinson’s motives and whether he acted alone.
Kirk’s death has sparked tributes from allies and strong condemnation from political leaders across the spectrum. Utah officials have promised a full investigation, while Turning Point USA called his killing a “tragic and senseless act of violence.”
