Dangote Truck Crushes Pregnant Woman, Child, Six Others in Ondo

By Erewunmi Peace

At least eight people, including a pregnant woman and a child, have reportedly lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a Dangote-branded cement truck in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the truck, allegedly carrying cement, lost control and rammed into several road users near the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

The impact of the crash left several victims trapped under the vehicle, with residents and passers-by rushing to rescue survivors.

According to reports by Daily Post and BusinessDay, the victims included a pregnant woman, a mother and her child, as well as several commercial motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the accident, saying that rescue operations were carried out in collaboration with local security teams and community volunteers. The remains of the deceased have reportedly been deposited at the Ikare-Akoko General Hospital morgue.

The Ondo State Sector Commander of the FRSC described the crash as avoidable, attributing it to possible brake failure. He urged truck drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits, especially on hilly terrains like Akungba.

Although the vehicle involved bore Dangote Cement branding, it is not yet clear whether it was directly owned by the company or operated by a contracted driver.

The Dangote Group had yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report.

This latest tragedy has reignited public concern over recurring accidents involving heavy-duty trucks in Ondo and other parts of the country, prompting renewed calls for stricter regulations on haulage operations.

This report is based on verified information from credible Nigerian media outlets including Daily Post, BusinessDay, and official statements from the FRSC. Details about ownership and the total casualty figure are still being verified as of press time.
