Dele Momodu Says 2027 Presidential Election Is an Ethnic Contest, Tinubu Secures South

By Erewunmi Peace

Media mogul and political commentator Dele Momodu has described the 2027 Nigerian presidential election as largely an ethnic contest, highlighting the political dynamics shaping the race.

Momodu stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has effectively secured the southern region through recent political maneuvers, including defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that the opposition’s most viable strategy would involve forming alliances that consider both ethnic and religious balances.

According to Momodu, a strong opposition would need to present a Northern Muslim candidate alongside a popular Southern Christian running mate to pose a credible challenge to Tinubu’s likely Muslim/Muslim ticket. He also noted that prominent southern figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Governor Peter Obi, are unlikely to succeed independently without a united front.

Momodu’s comments underscore the significant role that regional and religious considerations are expected to play in shaping voter behavior and political strategy in the 2027 election.
