Dolly Parton, 79, Puts Music Career on Hold After Husband Carl Dean’s Death

By Erewunmi Peace
Country music legend Dolly Parton has announced that she is putting her music projects on hold, months after the death of her beloved husband, Carl Dean. The heartbreaking decision comes as the 79-year-old icon continues to grieve and navigate life after losing her partner of nearly six decades.
“I Can’t Do It Right Now,” Says Dolly
In an emotional interview on Khloé Kardashian’s “Khloé in Wonderland” podcast, Parton revealed that she has stepped away from songwriting and recording — at least temporarily.
“I can’t do it right now… I’ve got so many other things that I can’t afford the luxury of getting emotional right now,” Parton shared. “I’ll write something else, though, if it comes. I’m just putting that all on hold.”
Her comments touched the hearts of millions of fans worldwide, many of whom have followed her love story and musical journey for decades.
A Love That Lasted a Lifetime
Parton and Carl Dean were married in 1966 and remained fiercely private throughout their 59-year marriage. Carl passed away in March 2025, and Dolly later paid tribute to him with the emotional release of her song, “If You Hadn’t Been There.”
She described Carl as her “rock,” and credited him for being her anchor through fame, loss, and life’s ups and downs.
Not a Goodbye to Music — Just a Pause
Despite this pause, Dolly reassured fans that she is not quitting music forever.
“Music is a part of me, and it always will be. But right now, I need to take care of myself and honor my husband in the quiet ways that feel right to me.”
Dolly continues to be active in other ventures, including her literacy foundation, business interests, and upcoming memoir project set for late 2025.
