Ebonyi Governor Suspends 85 Top Officials for Missing State Event

In a bold and unexpected move, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has suspended a total of 85 top government officials for failing to attend a crucial state function held on Monday, July 28, 2025.
According to an official statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the suspensions affect 25 Commissioners, 22 Permanent Secretaries, and 38 Special and Senior Assistants. The directive takes immediate effect and will last for one month.
“This action is a direct consequence of the gross act of insubordination and lack of commitment shown by the affected officials who failed to attend a key state event despite prior notice and expectations,” the statement read.
Among those affected are:
Commissioners for Works, Finance, Lands & Survey, Environment, and Information:
Stanley Mbam, Prof. Leonard Uguru, Mathew Nwobashi, Victor Chukwu, Ikeuwa Omebe
Several Permanent Secretaries and Senior Aides across various ministries and government departments, whose names were also listed in the official release.
The Governor’s decision is seen as part of a broader effort to reinforce discipline and accountability within the state’s executive cabinet and civil service. Analysts suggest the move sends a strong message to public servants about the importance of protocol, responsibility, and active participation in governance.
This development has sparked mixed reactions among residents and political observers. While some praise the Governor for taking a firm stance against absenteeism and laxity, others have raised concerns about the administrative gap the suspensions may cause.
This is not the first time Governor Nwifuru has taken decisive disciplinary action. Since assuming office, he has consistently emphasized performance, loyalty, and ethical governance as non-negotiable standards for serving in his administration.
The affected officials are expected to hand over their duties to the next ranking officers in their respective offices during the suspension period
