Ekiti Seeks ₦175.75 Billion NRDF Grant to Boost Agriculture, Solid Minerals, and Tourism

By Erewunmi Peace
In a bold move to reshape its economic future, the Government of Ekiti State has formally requested a ₦175.75 billion grant from the Natural Resources Development Fund (NRDF) to fund transformative projects across agriculture, solid minerals, and tourism.
The proposal was presented during a strategic meeting with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in Ado-Ekiti. The delegation, led by the Chairman of RMAFC’s Committee on the NRDF, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, was received by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Niyi Adebayo, who represented Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
According to the state government, the grant will be used to drive a capital-intensive and knowledge-driven economic plan with key focus areas in commercial agriculture, mineral resource development, and tourism infrastructure. These sectors, the government says, hold immense potential for generating internal revenue, attracting investors, enhancing food security, and creating thousands of jobs.
“We are not seeking handouts; we are asking for strategic investment in our people, resources, and future,” said Mr. Adebayo. “Ekiti has what it takes to become a hub for agro-industrial processing, responsible mining, and cultural tourism if properly supported.”
In response, Ambassador Akawor commended the state’s vision and promised a thorough review. He noted that RMAFC would conduct feasibility studies and make recommendations to support funding approval through the NRDF.
The grant request aligns with the broader agenda of the Oyebanji-led administration to diversify Ekiti’s economy beyond federal allocations and unlock the full value of its natural and human resources.
What to Expect Next:
A technical feasibility review by RMAFC teams
Project validation and inspection visits
Possible phased disbursement of the NRDF grant once approved
With rising economic uncertainty nationwide, Ekiti’s push for long-term economic sustainability through resource-based development may offer a replicable model for other Nigerian states.
