In a historic move to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, the Federal Government has approved a total of ₦712.26 billion for the full rehabilitation, upgrade, and modernisation of Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
This approval was granted during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier this week. The massive investment is part of a broader ₦900 billion aviation infrastructure revamp under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, aimed at positioning Nigeria as a global aviation hub.
The approved project will involve:
Complete demolition of the existing terminal structure down to the frame
Installation of new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Modernisation of terminal facilities to meet international standards
Expansion of terminal capacity and improved passenger experience
The rehabilitation will be carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and is expected to span 22 months.
Speaking at the post-FEC press briefing, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), highlighted the urgency of the project, citing the terminal’s aging infrastructure and increasing passenger demands.
“We are rebuilding Terminal One completely. The new facility will be built to modern international standards and will enhance the country’s image and aviation capacity,” Keyamo said.
As part of the overall aviation overhaul:
A ₦49.9 billion perimeter fence and security system for the Lagos airport was also approved.
Additional projects at Kano and Port Harcourt International Airports were included in the total ₦900 billion budget, covering new terminals, runways, and fire stations.
Why It Matters
MMIA is Nigeria’s busiest airport and a critical gateway to West Africa. This comprehensive upgrade aims to improve safety, security, efficiency, and customer satisfaction—potentially boosting tourism, business, and international investment.
Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
