The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission (NUC), has approved the establishment of a new tertiary institution named the University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omuma, in Imo State.
The official recognition was presented to the Imo State Government at the NUC headquarters in Abuja. The event was attended by the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, and top officials from the Ministry of Education and the NUC.
Speaking during the presentation, NUC’s Executive Secretary commended the Imo State Government for investing in innovation and technology-driven education. He emphasized that the new university would focus on digital entrepreneurship, innovation, and scientific research, aligning with Nigeria’s commitment to promoting science and technology for national development.
Governor Hope Uzodinma expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the NUC for the approval, noting that the new university will play a crucial role in creating employment opportunities, advancing research, and providing access to quality tertiary education for young Nigerians.
The new institution brings the number of state-owned universities in Nigeria to 70, according to the NUC.
The University of Innovation, Science and Technology is expected to begin operations once the necessary administrative and academic structures are fully in place. Details about student admissions, academic programmes, and staff recruitment will be released in the coming months.
Education stakeholders have lauded the development, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s science and technology sector.
