The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Friday, July 12.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. He noted that the holiday is part of the nationwide observance and reflection on the life, leadership, and legacy of the former military Head of State and democratically elected President.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the public holiday will allow Nigerians across all states to pay tribute to Buhari’s contributions to national unity, security reform, and infrastructural development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier declared a seven-day mourning period starting from Saturday, July 13 to Friday, July 19, with national flags flying at half-mast across the country and Nigerian missions abroad.
In a related development, the Northwest Governors Forum has also jointly declared July 15 a public holiday across all states in the region, recognizing Buhari’s influence and leadership in Northern Nigeria and beyond.
“The late President Buhari was a patriot who served Nigeria with dedication, both as a military leader and a civilian president. His legacy of discipline, integrity, and national service will continue to inspire generations,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.
Buhari, aged 82, was Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 and previously served as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985. He was known for his anti-corruption stance, infrastructure projects, and efforts to strengthen national security.
Funeral arrangements are ongoing, with national tributes and regional ceremonies expected in the coming days.
