FG to Establish Cattle Breeding Centres Across Six Geopolitical Zones — Agric Minister

By Erewunmi Peace

In a bold move to revamp Nigeria’s livestock sector, the Federal Government has announced plans to establish cattle breeding centres across all six geopolitical zones of the country.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, revealed this during a citizens-government engagement and mid-term performance review held in Kaduna on Tuesday. He said the initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration and aims to address long-standing challenges in livestock productivity, animal health, and food security.

“We’re taking a multi-sectoral approach involving the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Water Resources, Blue Economy, and Livestock Development to ensure that Nigeria’s livestock sector meets modern standards,” Dr. Abdullahi stated.

The breeding centres are expected to improve cattle genetics, reduce the frequency of farmer-herder conflicts, and boost the nation’s meat and dairy production. The initiative will also include infrastructure for water access, pasture development, and veterinary services.

The government emphasized its commitment to creating a sustainable livestock economy that contributes meaningfully to national GDP while enhancing job creation and rural development.

What to Expect:

One centre in each geopolitical zone

Focus on cattle genetics, health, and productivity

Collaboration across key ministries and stakeholders

Boost in local meat and milk production

This development comes as part of broader agricultural reforms targeted at increasing food security and modernizing Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project unfolds.
