The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Command, has secured the conviction of a final-year student and three others involved in internet fraud in Kwara State.
The convicted student, Olaitan Abdulwahab Damilare, a 25-year-old final-year Quantity Surveying student, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by Justice M.M. Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court after pleading guilty to impersonation and internet fraud. Damilare, who posed online as a white woman named “Fav,” defrauded an American victim, Michael, of $2,100 in gift cards.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the forfeiture of $2,000, an iPhone X, and an Infinix smartphone to the Federal Government.
Three other convicts were sentenced on similar charges:
Maruf Quadri Kolawole was jailed for six months and forfeited an iPhone 13 Pro Max and A$950.
Habeeb Abiodun Jimoh received six months’ imprisonment and forfeited an iPhone 14 Pro Max, an HP laptop, and $365.
Mubarak Moruf was sentenced to one year in prison or a fine of ₦400,000. He also forfeited an iPhone 15 Pro Max, an iPhone 7, and $300.
The EFCC stated that all four were arrested following actionable intelligence on their suspicious cyber activities. Investigations revealed that they had impersonated foreigners to defraud unsuspecting victims abroad.
The convictions underscore the Commission’s continued efforts to clamp down on cybercrime and restore integrity to Nigeria’s digital space.
