Floods Displace 3,000, Affect 57,000 Residents in Lagos – Sanwo-Olu

By Erewunmi Peace

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that recent flooding incidents in the state have displaced over 3,000 residents and affected more than 57,000 people across several local government areas.

Speaking during an emergency briefing at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, the governor attributed the widespread flooding to intense and prolonged rainfall, poor drainage management, and the city’s low-lying topography.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), alongside other relevant bodies, has been mobilized to provide temporary shelter, food supplies, and medical support to affected communities. He added that the government is also assessing long-term measures to reduce the risk of recurrent flooding, including improved drainage systems and stricter building control regulations.

“The safety and well-being of Lagosians remain our top priority. We are working with local and international partners to ensure displaced persons receive the help they need,” the governor said.

Communities most affected include parts of Ikorodu, Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa, Alimosho, and Lagos Island, where residents reported severe damage to homes, roads, and businesses.

Environmental experts have called for sustainable waste management practices and increased public awareness to prevent future disasters, warning that Lagos’s vulnerability to climate change could worsen if immediate action is not taken.
