From Farm to Future: FG Launches Mega Food Security Projects Across South-West States

By Erewunmi Peace

In a bold move to tackle food insecurity and modernize agriculture, the Federal Government of Nigeria has rolled out a series of large-scale food security projects across the South-West geopolitical zone. Tagged “From Farm to Future,” the initiative aims to boost crop production, improve irrigation, and empower farmers with sustainable technologies.

According to official reports, the projects include the deployment of 323 greenhouses and over 400 solar-powered boreholes across states such as Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti. These facilities are designed to support all-year farming, reduce reliance on rain-fed agriculture, and address water scarcity in rural communities.

The Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) also announced plans to construct seven new dams within the region. These dams will come with modern irrigation systems, water reservoirs, and agro-processing facilities to support commercial farming and rural livelihoods.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Ogun State, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, emphasized the government’s commitment to national food sufficiency. “These projects represent our investment in the future of Nigeria’s agriculture. They will support thousands of farmers, enhance climate resilience, and drive rural development,” he said.

Stakeholders in the agricultural sector, including local farmers and cooperatives, have welcomed the initiative, urging continuous support, training, and maintenance to ensure long-term success.

With Nigeria facing rising food prices, erratic weather, and growing population demands, this project is seen as a critical step toward self-sufficiency and economic stability.
