Rivers Governor meets President in Abuja after lifting of emergency rule, pledges stability and cooperation.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on Monday visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, declaring that “proper peace” has returned to the oil-rich state.
The visit marks Fubara’s first official engagement with the President since the lifting of the six-month emergency rule that had suspended political officeholders in Rivers State.
Speaking with journalists after the closed-door meeting, Fubara said his administration has made progress in restoring harmony following months of political tension.
“Peace has truly returned to Rivers. We are moving forward with unity and a stronger commitment to the people,” the governor said, assuring that his government would continue to work with all stakeholders to sustain stability.
The Rivers crisis had pitted Fubara against his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, leading to political turmoil and violent clashes in parts of the state. The Federal Government intervened with an emergency rule in March 2025, which was lifted last week after consultations.
Fubara’s remarks suggest a reconciliation with key political figures in the state. He stressed that his priority now is to deliver good governance, rebuild trust, and restore confidence among citizens.
President Tinubu, while receiving the governor, expressed optimism that peace would endure in Rivers and called for continued cooperation among political leaders.
The governor’s visit is seen as a step toward consolidating the fragile peace in Rivers State, which remains central to Nigeria’s oil economy and national stability.
