FUOYE Lecturer Accused of Rape, University Sets Up Panel to Investigate

By Erewunmi Peace

A lecturer at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), identified as Mr. Raphael Segun Larayetan, has been accused of raping a female student and later sharing her contact information with a colleague, according to a report published by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

The student, identified in the FIJ report as “Roseline” (not her real name), alleged that the lecturer had been sexually harassing her for several years before the alleged assault took place. She claimed that after she stopped responding to his advances, the lecturer lured her under false pretenses and raped her.

According to the FIJ’s account, Roseline further alleged that Mr. Larayetan passed her contact details to another lecturer, advising him to “speak to her one-on-one.” The incident, the report stated, has caused significant distress for the student, who has since sought support.

When contacted by FIJ, Mr. Larayetan denied the allegations, describing them as “absolute lies.” He maintained that the claims were fabricated and that he is ready to cooperate with any official investigation.

The university management has reportedly constituted a panel to look into the allegations and determine the facts of the case. As of the time of filing this report, no official findings or disciplinary actions have been made public.

FUOYE authorities have not yet released an official statement, but sources within the institution said the matter is being handled internally to ensure due process and fairness to all parties involved.

The case has reignited discussions about sexual harassment and power abuse in Nigerian universities, with students and advocacy groups calling for stricter enforcement of institutional policies to protect students from exploitation.
