The process to select the next Awujale of Ijebuland has officially begun, with the Fusengbuwa Ruling House — next in line according to Ijebu tradition — reaffirming its commitment to traditional rites, including the consultation of the Ifa oracle to determine the rightful successor.
This comes just days after the passing of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, who reigned for over six decades. He was buried on July 15, 2025, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
On Wednesday, July 17, the Fusengbuwa family staged the symbolic Gbedu drum ceremony, signifying their readiness to produce the next monarch. The ceremony, which is rich in cultural significance, was attended by traditional title holders, family elders, and members of the Ijebu royal council.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Prince Adesanya Adetayo emphasized the importance of preserving the customs of Ijebuland:
“We are following due process. The Ifa oracle will guide our decision. This is not a matter of money or politics. Only a son of the soil, grounded in our culture, will become Awujale.”
He further warned against any form of interference by government authorities or political influence, urging all stakeholders to allow the traditional process to unfold without disruption.
The Fusengbuwa ruling house also called for unity among all royal families and kingmakers, stating that the new monarch must be acceptable to the Ifa and be capable of upholding the sacred traditions of the Ijebu people.
The selection of a new Awujale will follow customary steps, including internal screening, Ifa consultation, and ratification by the kingmakers of Ijebu Ode.
As anticipation builds, the people of Ijebuland await the next chapter in their storied monarchy — one guided by ancestral wisdom and spiritual conviction.
