By Erewunmi Peace

In a bold move to boost Africa’s digital future, Google has committed $37 million to empower African youths through investments in artificial intelligence (AI), digital skills, and research initiatives.

Announced on July 30, 2025, this investment aims to equip young Africans with the skills and tools necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.

According to Google, the funds will support a range of projects including:

$25 million for AI-driven food security through the AI for the Global Goals initiative, enabling NGOs and researchers to develop solutions for agricultural sustainability and hunger prevention.

$3 million to the Masakhane Research Foundation to advance natural language processing in over 40 African languages — supporting language preservation, inclusion, and AI development.

Support for over 100 African AI startups, especially those focused on healthcare, agriculture, education, and climate solutions.

100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships for African youth, covering key fields like cybersecurity, IT support, data analytics, and AI essentials.

Launch of an AI Community Center in Accra, Ghana, to promote responsible AI education and community collaboration.

$7 million in digital and AI education support across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

$1 million research grants to the University of Pretoria and Wits MIND Institute in South Africa to foster advanced AI research and innovation.

Speaking about the initiative, Google Africa’s Director for Government Affairs and Public Policy, Charles Murito, said: “This investment demonstrates our belief in the potential of African innovation and the importance of inclusivity in building global AI solutions.”

The move comes amid growing global interest in Africa’s young population and untapped tech potential. With over 60% of the continent’s population under 25, Google’s investment is seen as a step toward building an AI-powered future driven by local talent.
