“Heartbreaking and Unacceptable” — Dabiri-Erewa Condemns Alleged Abuse of Nigerians in India

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has condemned the alleged mistreatment of Nigerian nationals in India, describing the reports as “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”
NiDCOM’s Chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reacted to disturbing accounts claiming that some Nigerian girls detained in deportation camps in New Delhi were subjected to rape, assault, and forced administration of unknown substances.
In a statement released by the Commission, Dabiri-Erewa said such treatment represents a “grave violation of human dignity and fundamental human rights” and called for an immediate and thorough investigation.
She emphasized that the Nigerian High Commission in India, along with relevant authorities and human rights organizations, would be engaged to verify the claims and provide necessary support to the alleged victims.
The Commission urged India to uphold international human rights standards in its dealings with foreign nationals and assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to ensure justice and accountability.
While NiDCOM’s statement reflects the seriousness of the allegations, independent investigations by Indian authorities or human rights bodies are yet to publicly confirm the reported abuses.
