Illegal Migration: Makinde Allocates 10,000 Hectares for Youth Reintegration Project

By Erewunmi Peace

In a bold step to combat illegal migration and reintegrate vulnerable youth, Governor Seyi Makinde has allocated 10,000 hectares of land in Iganna, Itesiwaju Local Government Area, for a Youth Empowerment and Reintegration Project.

The initiative, unveiled in partnership with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and supported by the European Union and Danish Government, aims to discourage irregular migration—popularly known as “japa through the desert”—by providing opportunities for returnees and at-risk youth.

Mechanised Farming & Empowerment

The 10,000-hectare project will focus on:

Mechanised farming

Entrepreneurship support

Access to markets

Job creation

And youth reintegration

According to Mr. Segun Adegoke, the governor’s Special Adviser on Migration and Homeland Security, 18% of the beneficiaries will be drawn from Itesiwaju and Iwajowa local communities to ensure local inclusion.

“The land has been approved and cleared by the governor. This program will be a turning point for many of our young people. We are creating real opportunities to keep them from embarking on dangerous journeys through the desert,” Adegoke said.

Curbing Illegal ‘Japa’

Oyo State has been identified as a source, destination, and transit point for irregular migration in Nigeria. The new program targets the root causes by creating sustainable livelihoods and awareness about the dangers of desert crossings and trafficking.

“This is a comprehensive approach to migration management. We are building an inclusive Oyo State where the youth can thrive at home,” he added.
