Makinde to Atiku: Your Exit Will Not Affect PDP’s Fortune

By Erewunmi Peace

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has downplayed the political impact of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that his exit will not in any way affect the fortunes of the party.

Makinde made this statement on Tuesday during an interactive session with party stakeholders in Ibadan, following widespread reactions to Atiku’s resignation from the PDP.

According to Makinde, political parties are institutions that are larger than any individual. He emphasized that while every Nigerian has the freedom to associate with any political group, the PDP remains strong, resilient, and forward-looking.

“While we respect the personal decision of the former Vice President, I want to assure our members and supporters that the PDP is not shaken. Individuals may leave, but the institution remains. We are focused on rebuilding and repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 elections,” Makinde said.

Atiku Abubakar announced his resignation from the PDP on July 14, 2025, citing irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the founding principles of the party. His departure has stirred reactions across the political landscape, with some analysts predicting internal crises within the party.

However, Makinde, alongside other prominent PDP leaders like Chief Bode George, insisted that the party would not be derailed. George echoed similar sentiments, urging members to remain steadfast and continue mobilizing at the grassroots level.

“No one is bigger than the party. We’ve seen exits before, and the PDP has always bounced back. This time will not be any different,” George added.

As the PDP prepares for the 2027 general elections, leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to internal reforms, youth inclusion, and national unity.
