Makinde Urges Nigerians to Embrace Attitudinal Change in Politics and Governance

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on Nigerians to adopt a new mindset towards politics and governance, stressing that sustainable national progress depends on active civic engagement and responsible leadership.
Speaking at a public forum on good governance and civic responsibility, Makinde highlighted the critical role of citizens in shaping Nigeria’s future. He urged Nigerians to go beyond criticism and instead participate meaningfully in democratic processes—through voting, community involvement, and holding leaders accountable.
“To make Nigeria great, we all have a role to play. Good governance doesn’t start from the top alone—it begins with the attitude and choices of the people,” Makinde stated.
The Governor emphasized that political apathy, indifference to public policy, and a culture of complaining without action have contributed to weak governance structures and unresponsive leadership.
He also charged youths and professionals to enter the political space, advocating for competence, transparency, and integrity in public office.
“We need a shift from transactional politics to transformational leadership. The earlier we understand that governance is a collective responsibility, the faster our nation will develop,” he added.
Makinde’s remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are expressing deep dissatisfaction with the state of the nation—from economic hardship and insecurity to perceived government inefficiency.
As the 2027 general elections gradually approach, the Governor’s call for attitudinal change could spark broader conversations around civic education, leadership reform, and inclusive governance.
