NDLEA Arrests 37, Seizes Over 345kg of Narcotics in Edo State Operations

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its war against drug trafficking in Edo State, with a recent crackdown that led to the arrest of 37 suspects and the seizure of over 345 kilograms of illicit drugs.

The State Commander of the NDLEA, Callys Alumona, disclosed the agency’s achievements during a press briefing, revealing that the arrests were made throughout June as part of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of narcotics in the state.

Key Figures from the Operation:

37 suspects arrested (25 males and 12 females)

345.421 kilograms of drugs recovered

310.485kg of cannabis sativa

0.3175kg of methamphetamine

0.3415kg of psychotropic substances

33.226kg of abandoned cannabis

0.67kg of psychotropics

0.373kg of methamphetamine

5 litres of codeine syrup

4 grams of cocaine

In addition to seizures, the NDLEA also destroyed cannabis plantations spanning 7.27 hectares in the forests of Okhuse and Ugbada Uzebba, located in Owan West Local Government Area.

Legal Action and Rehabilitation

Out of the 37 suspects:

11 have been charged to court

5 convictions secured

107 drug-related cases are still pending in court

The agency’s Drug Demand Reduction Unit also made significant progress by providing counselling to 32 clients and conducting community sensitization campaigns across schools, markets, and religious institutions.

Commander Alumona emphasized the NDLEA’s commitment to a drug-free society, stating:

“The NDLEA will not relent in its efforts to dismantle drug syndicates and reduce demand for illicit substances through public education and rehabilitation.”

The operation is part of the agency’s broader nationwide strategy to combat the rising abuse and trafficking of drugs across Nigeria.
