The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate and indefinite closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, following growing concerns over campus security.
This directive was announced on Tuesday, June 25, in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman. The government stated that the closure was necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order after recent violent incidents involving students.
The most alarming of these was the tragic killing of a student at an off-campus residence on Sunday, June 23, which sparked widespread unrest and protest among the student body. Sources within the institution confirm that the incident raised serious safety concerns, prompting urgent intervention by state authorities.
“In view of the current security situation and to prevent further escalation of violence, His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, has approved the immediate closure of the university until further notice,” the statement read.
Students have been directed to vacate the campus premises immediately, while security operatives have been deployed to maintain peace and protect university assets.
The university management is expected to issue further instructions regarding academic activities and resumption timelines as the situation evolves.
This closure marks a significant development in the state’s effort to ensure the safety of lives and property within educational institutions.
