NiMet Issues Three-Day Rain and Thunderstorm Alert Across Nigeria

By Erewunmi Peace
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather alert forecasting widespread rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the country beginning Monday, July 7, and continuing through Wednesday, July 9.
According to NiMet’s public weather bulletin, morning thunderstorms are expected in northern states including Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kaduna, while afternoon and evening rains may affect FCT Abuja, Niger, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi. Coastal and inland areas in the South will also experience moderate to heavy showers during this period.
“We are advising the general public, especially road users, airline operators, and outdoor event planners to take necessary precautions to avoid risk during this weather cycle,” the agency warned.
The agency further noted that visibility could be reduced during thunderstorms, and flash flooding is possible in areas with poor drainage systems.
SAFETY ADVICE:
Airlines and travelers: Check with local weather stations before departure.
Residents: Secure loose outdoor items and avoid sheltering under trees during storms.
Drivers: Slow down during rainfall and avoid flooded areas.
Event planners: Monitor the forecast for real-time updates and consider rescheduling outdoor events.
The weather pattern is expected to gradually ease by Thursday, July 10, although light showers may continue in isolated areas. The rainy season, now in full swing, could bring more frequent thunderstorms in the coming weeks.
NiMet continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates as needed.
