Nursing Mother Allegedly Kills Two Children in Suspected Mental Breakdown

By Erewunmi Peace

Residents of Trans Ekulu community in Enugu State were left in shock on Monday, July 21, 2025, after a nursing mother allegedly killed her two biological children in a chilling domestic tragedy.

The incident occurred at No. 47 Unity Road, Trans Ekulu, in Enugu East Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Mrs. Chidinma Arinze, was arrested after neighbors discovered the lifeless bodies of her children in the apartment.

Victims

The victims were:

Esther Arinze – 4-year-old daughter

Chibusoma Arinze – 3-month-old son

Both children were reportedly found with deep stab wounds believed to have been inflicted with a sharp object. Neighbors, who heard no prior signs of struggle, were alerted after unusual silence from the apartment prompted concern.

Community Reaction

Eyewitnesses say the incident has thrown the neighborhood into mourning. Many who knew the family described the mother as “quiet but withdrawn” in recent months.

“This is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever seen,” said a resident who chose to remain anonymous. “We are still trying to understand why she did it.”

Arrest and Investigation

Mrs. Arinze was arrested by officers from the Enugu State Police Command shortly after the incident. She reportedly showed no signs of resistance during her arrest.

While no official motive has been confirmed, initial speculation suggests the possibility of a postpartum mental health crisis, such as postpartum psychosis — a rare but severe mental illness that can occur in mothers after childbirth.

The case has been transferred to the Enugu State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further interrogation and psychological evaluation.

Authorities React

As of this report, the Enugu State Police Command has yet to release an official statement, but investigations are ongoing.

Mental health professionals and child protection advocates are urging the government to prioritize maternal mental health in Nigeria, citing the growing number of tragic cases linked to untreated psychological conditions.
