Obi Lacks Character to Be President, Says Ativie, Edo LP Factional Chair

By Erewunmi Peace

Factional Chairperson of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, Elizabeth Ativie, has taken a swipe at the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying Nigerians have now seen the “true nature” of someone who could have become president.

Ativie, who leads the Edo LP faction loyal to the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, accused Obi of lacking the character and consistency required for national leadership.

“The wind has blown and Nigerians have seen the true dictatorial nature of a would-have-been President. Peter Obi has been jumping from one alliance to another without clear direction. He is the problem of the Labour Party,” Ativie said.

Her remarks come amid internal wrangling within the Labour Party, particularly in Edo State, where factions are battling for control ahead of the state’s political contests.

Ativie alleged that Obi’s actions since the 2023 general elections have shown he is more interested in political maneuvering than in strengthening the party. She maintained that the party under Abure’s leadership would reposition itself despite Obi’s alleged inconsistencies.

The former Edo Assembly Speaker added that Obi’s style of politics has exposed him to Nigerians, claiming that his recent moves confirm fears about his leadership qualities.

Her comments are expected to intensify the already heated debate within the Labour Party, which has been grappling with internal divisions since the end of the 2023 elections.
