The Ondo State Government has cleared a total of ₦12 billion in gratuity arrears owed to retired local government workers across the state, marking a significant step in reducing the financial burden on pensioners and restoring trust in the state’s welfare system.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who made the announcement during a meeting with council chairmen and pensioners’ representatives in Akure, said the payment demonstrates his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and financial accountability.
“We remain dedicated to ensuring that those who served the state diligently receive their rightful entitlements. This ₦12 billion payment reflects our resolve to clear outstanding obligations and bring relief to retirees who have contributed immensely to the development of our dear state,” the governor said.
According to the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the payment covers gratuity arrears accumulated over several years, benefiting hundreds of retired local government staff and primary school teachers across Ondo’s 18 councils.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also commended local government chairmen for their grassroots development efforts, citing improvements in rural infrastructure, education, and healthcare delivery. He encouraged them to sustain transparency and continue prioritizing projects that directly impact residents.
Meanwhile, pensioners across the state have expressed appreciation for the payment, describing it as a long-awaited relief. However, some groups have called on the government to ensure consistent monthly releases to fully clear any remaining arrears and prevent future backlogs.
The Ondo State Government reiterated its commitment to financial prudence, timely payment of salaries, and continued investments in both human capital and local development.
