Oyo Residents React as State Introduces ‘Entertainment Tax Clearance’ for Events

By Erewunmi Peace

The Oyo State Government has introduced a new Entertainment Tax Clearance policy aimed at regulating social and public events across the state — a move that has stirred mixed reactions among residents.

According to reports circulating on social media and local news platforms, the new directive requires event organizers to obtain a clearance permit before hosting occasions such as weddings, naming ceremonies, birthdays, burials, and concerts.
Some reports also claim that the clearance fee could be as high as ₦35,000 per event, although this amount has not yet been officially confirmed by the Oyo State Government.

The policy, reportedly managed by the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue (BIR), is said to be part of efforts to improve internally generated revenue (IGR) and ensure proper documentation of entertainment-related activities in the state.

However, the move has generated debate among residents and business owners. While some believe it could help regulate event planning and improve tax compliance, others have criticized it as an additional financial burden on citizens already grappling with a high cost of living.

“People are struggling to celebrate life events. Introducing another fee on top of existing levies could discourage small gatherings,” a resident told reporters in Ibadan.

As of press time, the Oyo State Government has not released an official statement or detailed rate schedule clarifying the scope of the Entertainment Tax Clearance policy.
