PDP, INEC Hold Closed-Door Meeting Over National Secretary Dispute

In a significant political development, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met behind closed doors with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

The high-level meeting comes amid a growing internal dispute within the PDP concerning the position of the National Secretary and INEC’s recent rejection of a notice regarding the party’s upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30.

Led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, the PDP delegation included governors, party elders, and former high-ranking officials. The party sought INEC’s clarification on procedural matters relating to party documentation and recognition of leadership roles.

INEC had earlier declined to acknowledge the NEC meeting notice submitted by PDP, citing that it lacked the joint signature of both the National Chairman and a duly recognized National Secretary — a requirement outlined in the party’s constitution and INEC’s regulatory framework. The confusion arose due to competing claims over the rightful holder of the party’s secretaryship.

Following the private session, PDP described the talks as “thorough and fruitful,” assuring stakeholders that the party is committed to due process and internal consultation. No official statement has yet been released by INEC, but sources say the Commission reiterated its position on following laid-down procedures and constitutional compliance.

What This Means:

This meeting signals a crucial step in resolving the internal crisis that has plagued the PDP in recent months. With the 2027 general elections gradually approaching, stability within major parties like the PDP is essential for Nigeria’s democratic process.
