The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man, Bernard Odinchefu, for allegedly extorting families and traders in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspect was arrested on October 1, 2025, following intelligence reports. He is accused of demanding levies from traders and allegedly forcing bereaved families to pay up to ₦100,000 before being allowed to conduct burial ceremonies.
According to the police, the suspect had been operating within Ihiala and surrounding communities, instilling fear among residents while extorting money under threats. The command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
This development comes amid growing concern over the rising cases of illegal “burial levies” and community extortion by non-state actors across parts of the Southeast. Families in some communities have decried the practice, describing it as an additional burden in times of grief.
The Anambra State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and to report similar incidents, assuring that efforts are being intensified to dismantle such criminal networks in the state.
