President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in Abuja to pay tribute to the late statesman. Tinubu described Buhari as a leader who dedicated his life to the service of the nation, noting that the renaming of the institution is a lasting way to immortalize his legacy in the field of education and national development.
“In immortalizing Buhari, we recognize his contributions to nation-building, his enduring commitment to Nigeria’s unity, and the educational progress he championed, especially in the North-East,” Tinubu said.
The President added that the formal legal backing for the renaming will follow through the National Assembly to update the university’s enabling law.
The University of Maiduguri, established in 1975, has been one of the leading federal institutions in the North-East region. The renaming is seen as a symbolic gesture to honour Buhari’s impact both as a military head of state and a two-term democratically elected president.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with some hailing the move as well-deserved, while others argue that renaming universities after political figures should follow broader consultations.
