Respect Your Hosts, Don’t Abuse Their Hospitality — Fashola Tells Students

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), has advised Nigerian students to respect their host communities and refrain from actions that could portray them as ungrateful or disrespectful guests.
Speaking during an interaction with students at a recent public event, Fashola emphasized that mutual respect and good conduct are essential to maintaining peace and harmony in any environment.
“Wherever you find yourself, remember that you are a guest. Respect your hosts and don’t abuse their hospitality,” Fashola said.
“Your behaviour reflects not only on you as individuals but also on your families, institutions, and communities.”
The former Lagos State Governor urged students to demonstrate discipline, responsibility, and civic awareness while pursuing their education, adding that such values contribute to personal growth and national unity.
He also encouraged young Nigerians to focus on developing their talents and using knowledge to solve societal problems rather than engaging in divisive or disruptive acts.
Fashola, known for his advocacy of discipline and responsible citizenship, stressed that tolerance and respect for diversity remain key ingredients in building a peaceful and progressive society.
While his remarks have been widely shared on social media, some observers say the message comes at a time when universities across the country are facing challenges related to student activism, campus conflicts, and youth unrest.
