Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has applauded the peaceful conduct of the local government elections held across the state on Saturday, despite encountering a few logistical challenges in some areas.
The governor made the remarks shortly after casting his vote at Polling Unit 006, Ward E3, Lagos Island, around 11:09 a.m., alongside his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
Describing the process as “orderly and commendable,” Sanwo-Olu praised the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for its coordination and ability to manage issues swiftly.
“I am impressed with the overall calm and organization of the election. Yes, there were minor delays in logistics at a few locations, but LASIEC was able to resolve them promptly. It shows the strength of our democratic institutions and the maturity of our people,” the governor said.
Earlier in the day, some voters in parts of Alimosho, Mushin, and Surulere reported slight delays in the arrival of electoral materials. However, by midday, most polling units had commenced voting.
Security presence was noticeable but non-intrusive, with officers of the Nigeria Police, NSCDC, and LASTMA maintaining order without reports of violence or major disruptions.
Observers from various civil society groups including Yiaga Africa and the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) described the polls as “generally peaceful” and praised voter conduct.
Meanwhile, LASIEC Chairperson, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd), acknowledged the initial hitches but confirmed that all polling units eventually opened and that collation was proceeding smoothly.
“We are committed to delivering credible, free, and fair elections, and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of Lagosians,” she stated.
The local government elections, which determine leadership across the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs in Lagos, are considered critical to grassroots development and citizen engagement.
Final results are expected to be announced by LASIEC within 48 hours.
